Q – I wanted to put The Versatile Blogger Award button in my sidebar. The Versatile Blogger Award site was less than helpful in giving the code. It was easy to put the picture in a post, but I want more permanence! So, I wrote the code for the button. (I taught webpage design.) For those all of my blogging buddies who would like the button in their sidebar do this:
1. Add a new text widget.
2. Copy and paste the following code into the text box, it all has to be copied:
<a href=”http://versatilebloggeraward.files.wordpress.com”><img src=”http://versatilebloggeraward.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/versatileblogger113.png” alt=”The Versatile Blogger Award” /></a>
3. Save. This should put the award button in your sidebar.
I’ve been told there are problems. I’m not sure why, but I’ve had html problems with my wordpress blog in the past. When I look at the html code (notice the visual tag and the html tag upper right of your post box), wordpress is adding other text in for the < and the >. Copy and paste might not work, but hand-typing in the code above will. Since I made the code, I hand-typed it, that’s probably why I didn’t have problems.

The code does not have “The – so I’m not sure why that would be on the screen. The code works or it wouldn’t show on my page. Don’t type anything else in the box. It has to have the < copied too, not just the stuff inside. I'll stay at the computer while you try again.

The code doesn’t show up in comments. It doesn’t have “The in it though, so something is in the text box that shouldn’t be there.

I had the same problem. For some reason when you click “save” it changes the code so it just says ”The” /> at the end. Very strange.

I had Sweaty Knitter delete the text widget and add a new one. The only thing that can be in the box is the code. Make sure there are not any spaces before or after the code – just the code, the spaces before and after will add junk code from the blog.
